EARLY HEAD START CENTER DIRECTOR

LOCATION: KENNETT EARLY HEAD START

This position is responsible for the supervision and monitoring of all center activities to ensure compliance with Head Start/Early Head Start(HS/EHS) Performance Standards and state licensing regulations.  Assists all center staff in providing an environment conducive to learning for young children.  Provides supervisory leadership and planning to enhance teamwork among staff in the center.  

Program Administration and Coordination 

  1. Responsible for overall operation of the center.

    1. Maintains state licensing guidelines.

    2. Addresses any health and safety issues pertaining to the center in an expedient manner.

    3. Ensures that required enrollment is met and maintained.

    4. Schedules bus routes, including drop off and pick up of children.

    5. Approves in-town field trips and approves and processes field trip to Education Specialists for out-of-town field trips per agency policies.

  2. Assists in the planning of monthly family fun nights will all center staff and the family fun night parent committee.

  3. Recruits and welcomes parent and community volunteers.  

  4. Delegates job assignment and responsibilities.

  5. Implements all Head Start/Early Head Start program goals and objectives.

  6. Responsible for resolving complaints from parents, staff and community members.  Briefs assistant director on complaint and status/disposition of complaint.

  7. Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings to develop and implement individualized education programs as requested by the Special Needs Specialist. 

  8. Ensures confidentiality in all aspects of the program is maintained as directed and necessary.

Monitoring, Recordkeeping and Fiscal 

  1. With the other content area managers/specialists/coordinators :

    1. Monitors compliance with state licensing, the DAEOC HS/EHS work plans and the HS/EHS Performance Standards.

    2. Develops and implements a plan and system of continuous monitoring and evaluation of activities within the program.

    3. Participates in the annual program self-assessment and is responsible for implementing changes based upon the results.

    4. Ensures that all child development principles are being implemented in all component areas by monitoring classrooms and playgrounds daily.

  2. Maintains center filing, tracking and documentation systems.  

  3. Ensures that all reports are submitted on a timely basis.

  4. Monitors center budget related to the areas covered.

  5. Responsible for requisition of all supplies, materials and equipment for the center by designated due dates.

  6. Monitors all education, health, nutrition, social services, special needs, and mental health files on a weekly/monthly basis. 

  7. Monitors bus routes and rides each bus a minimum of once a month (where appropriate).

Supervision and Training 

  1. Supervises all center staff.  

  2. Conducts two staff meetings per month that includes all center staff and keeps appropriate documentation to include agendas, sign-in sheets and minutes. 

  3. Participates in screening and hiring of staff.

  4. Coordinates training and technical assistance with management staff concerning component needs and strengthening areas of weakness identified through monitoring activities.

  5. Promotes and enhances teamwork among staff.

  6. Plans and directs the work of the staff supervised.  Observes and gives feedback to staff or volunteers supervised where applicable and other staff as assigned on at least a weekly basis

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Administration, Social Work or Education from a four-year college or university. Must have two years managerial experience in a Human Services Program or related field.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Must have the ability to express warmth, understanding and affection to young children. Must possess the ability to communicate positively with parents, staff and community member.
